About Us
Kolkata Serving the God Foundation is an NGO that works to bring quality healthcare to the inhabitants of rural Purulia, West Bengal. It was founded in 2016 (and registered the following year) by Dr. Santanu Banerjee whose roots lie in a smallish village in the district. He is supported all the way by his medico wife, Dr. Kokila Banerjee.
India is still largely a nation of contrasts.
While advanced medical facilities are available – albeit at a cost, often formidable – in metros and to an extent in the larger towns and cities, rural India faces many challenges in this area even today. These include limited infrastructure, shortage of professionally-trained healthcare workers, limited public spending and governmental budgets, geographical obstacles, socioeconomic factors, unaffordable cost of tests and treatments, and last but not the least, lack of awareness.
It is encouraging to note that there have been initiatives launched by both the state .and central government, but there is so much ground to be covered.
In Purulia, a large percentage lives in the villages. As per the last census, of this, nearly 40% belong to the Scheduled Castes and Tribes. As with the rest of the state, surveys have indicated a shortage of healthcare facilities which compels the residents to look towards bigger cities or the nearest largest town.
Kolkata Serving the God Foundation was formed with an attempt the bridge this gap to the extent possible in some villages in Purulia by taking healthcare from Kolkata right into the region.
But why was Purulia chosen? Because it afforded ease of operations owing to a basic level of familiarity – securing a place and carrying out the checkups effectively.
The story that begun in 2016 has continued without a break till today, numerous challenges notwithstanding.
Dr. Santanu Banerjee and his small, dedicated team of likeminded individuals of both medicos and non-medicos has been working through the seasons, come rain or sunshine, visiting villages of Purulia on the first Sunday of each month.
Along the way, the patient count has increased from around 40 to over 400.
